The calcium and magnesium ions which cause hard water, along with other minerals and salts, are removed from the water supply (partial demineralisation removes only the so-called carbonate hardness, while full demineralisation removes all salts). The regeneration/exchange periods are oriented towards the water hardness and water consumption. An exchange/regeneration of the ion exchange resin is necessary. Capacity monitoring is performed using counters and an optical signal. Once the ion exchange resin is used up, this is indicated with an optical signal to the dishwashing machine being supplied with water, or indicated using a separate display unit.
